RW Joinery is proud to announce that once again it has pledged its support for Fire Door Safety Week, which this year takes place between the 23rd and 29th September. The public awareness campaign aims to increase the public’s understanding of the role fire doors play in helping to protect property and prevent loss of life in the event of a fire.
The focus of this year’s campaign is to highlight the critical role fire doors play in protecting occupants while sleeping. Nighttime is one of the most dangerous times for a fire to start because it can spread quickly before the alarm is raised. Properly maintained fire doors are critical to containing the fire, giving occupants time to escape the flames.
There will also be a series of events this year focusing on specialised housing and HMOs (Houses of Multiple Occupation). This is due to recent regulatory changes which implemented stricter fire safety requirements for all HMO licence holders. You can find more information about these events on the Fire Door Safety Week website or by following them on Twitter @FDSafetyWeek.
Record support for Fire Door Safety Week
This year’s event comes on the back of last year’s extremely successful campaign which achieved record support from both the fire safety industry and the media. Data shows the campaign reached 36.5 million users, with the Fire Door Safety website receiving 28,000 hits during the week, a jump of 44% compared to 2017.
Since its launch in 2013, the campaign has worked hard to increase awareness of fire safety standards in commercial, public and domestic accommodation. But there is still much work to be done. A poll commissioned during last year’s event showed a worrying lack of awareness from landlords when it comes to implementing fire safety standards.
The results showed less than a quarter of tenants has had a discussion with their landlord about fire safety measures in their building. While almost three-quarters of tenants said they would ignore advice to ‘stay put’ if a fire broke out in the building which did not affect their property.
