Balfour Beatty has engaged our services on the £42 million contract to transform the Fletcher complex and create striking new buildings for the world-renowned schools of Art, Architecture and Design – which includes fashion and textiles.
The work will also lead to the creation of the Jonathan KS Choi Creative and Cultural Centre, which will provide a space for students and staff from around the globe to pursue study and research and stimulate and nurture creativity. The centre will also contain the innovative new home for the DMU Confucius Institute, which will promote Chinese language and culture
Our works shall include for over 700 laminate faced doorsets and a large second fix joinery package.
The main interest however shall be in the design, manufacture and installation of a stunning reception desk and “the Harry Potter” staircase. Having been redesigned frequently the staircase shall consist of a series of flights of steps each over laying each other all in different directions and different plains. The staircase shall be clad with a combination of solid Oak and laminate faced panels.
Estimating Director for RW Joinery Kevin Lynam commented “we often say that if you can draw it, we can make it. On this occasion we might have to put our money where our mouth is. The over layers of this staircase mean that the steel framework will have to be lifted into place by a crane through a hole in the roof. Several lower staircases shall have to be lifted through the same hole which means that holes within the upper staircases need to be left out to allow for the cranes ropes. We are contracted to clad either side of the staircase and below it. Virtually no staircase can be reached with a traditional scaffold, or MEWPS. Each staircase will have to be clad by us completely before the next section can be installed. We have made several spectacular staircases before. I think this one will top them all”.
