Integrity & Insulation Glass

Fire resistant glass can be specified in two ways: Integrity & Insulation.

Integrity Glass prevents fire from penetrating the doorset but will not stop heat penetration. Therefore, there is a risk that any materials may eventually gain ignition on the opposite side.

Insulation Glass is designed to stop the transfer of heat whilst providing a degree of protection in the event of a fire.

Your building’s fire strategy will often dictate which one may be necessary and in some instances it may be beneficial to specify both.

Correctly specifying your vision panels will prevent potentially life-threatening circumstances in the event of a fire, by adding another layer of fire resistance to your doorset and buildings.

RW Doorsets provide the expertise you need to determine which solution is required and will advise you accordingly.

Regulations For Vision Panels

Approved Document M advises:

"Fully glazed doors or vision panels are required in entrance doors, doors in corridors and in passageways in public buildings."

In any event a door leaf is wider than 450mm wide, it must be provided with a suitable vision panel.

The doorset must have a “zone of visibility”, and this must be between 500mm and 1500mm from finished door level.

Any vision panel can be broken up by features like a midrail, but it must only be broken up between 800mm and 1150mm. Therefore, the vision panel does not need to be a complete panel.

Vision Panels & DDA Compliance

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) works to protect those with disabilities – including the blind and partially sighted – from discrimination.

DDA states:

Users should be able to view people approaching the other side of the door to avoid collision.

The diagram to the left shows the minimum requirements to satisfy Part M.

Be Confident In Your Specification

By partnering with a manufacturer who belongs to a third-party certification scheme, you're ensuring the highest standards for your doorset.

At RW Doorsets, we’re audited at least once a year to maintain efficient processes.

Those who belong to a third-party certification scheme, like RW Doorsets, have to follow guidelines set out in the third-party certificate. This includes a data sheet that stipulates what can and cannot be done when a door is fitted.

A certified glazed fire door provides you with peace of mind, whilst making your job, as a specifier, much easier.
